Department of Convention and
Tourism Development
Welcome, from Doane Liu, Executive Director
As of June 9, 2014, our department name changed from the Los Angeles Convention Center Department to the Department of Convention and Tourism Development (CTD). Mayor Garcetti signed the City Council approved ordinance authorizing this exciting transition to reflect our new vision – to drive economic development and job creation by increasing the competitiveness of Los Angeles as a convention and tourist destination.
Our strategy for doing so is comprised of four pillars:
- Privatizing the operations of the facility through a contract with AEG (the City still remains owner of the facility);
- Executing a new governance model which creates a newly empowered Executive Director, an authoritative rather than advisory Board of Commissioners with management responsibilities for the AEG and Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board (LATCB) contracts, and a mandate to promote the citywide leisure and hospitality sector;
- Modernizing the Convention Center facility and increasing space offerings to improve our competitive position in attracting new Citywide conventions and retaining returning business; and
- Promoting hotel development, with the goal of adding 4,000 new hotel rooms within walking distance of the Convention Center by 2020.
The Convention and Tourism Development team appreciates your support as we set forth in this New Direction, striving to represent and reflect the best of Los Angeles before an expanded regional, national, and international audience.
